I have mentioned here before that I did so badly in my maths 'O' Level and then in a resit I was not allowed to take it again as I was pulling down the average results for the Technical High school I attended. Fast forward about 50 years I was helping my eldest granddaughter who was about 14 at the time with her algebra and trigonometry, two areas of maths that once totally baffled me back then but it was bloody obvious to me now when going through it with her.
Having said that, as a graphic designer I never had need for such knowledge log books nor quadratic bloody equations. There's also a slide rule up in the loft somewhere still in the case it came in. Every time we move I come across it and try to work out how it's used, fail, and it goes back in a box. That level of bafflement is also experienced when opening up the bonnet and looking at the engine therein.

I've just been helping a friend's 9 year old with Fractions. Took a while for it all to come back but like you, it makes much more sense now. I did Engineering Maths and I've used them ooooooh, not once since graduating! I've got a slide rule somewhere. I remember taking it into a maths exam because it was the only thing you were allowed to take in. Hadn't got a clue how to use it then, and even less of a clue now!

I've heard football commentators referring to a 'slide rule pass'. I can only imagine this means the player receiving the ball stands there and looks at it while wondering what to do next.

I was 50 before I finished my education.
It turned out that I loved learning, I just hated school.

Learning is great, it's just all the "You! Yes! You behind the bike sheds! Stand still, laddie! How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?" stuff which is the issue.

As a TA, I've never seen any child belittled, shouted at, hit, or forced to eat anything they don't like.
I'd much rather be a child in school now than when I was there, apart from the fact we did a lot more ad hoc stuff, which they can't now.

I would hate to be at school now, what with social media and all that. School was bad enough being bullied whilst you were there, but it's 24x7 now. And I could not be a teacher - I take my hat off to them all.
