The Brits 2019

do they mean anything to anyone here?
I think they reached their peak in 1989 with Fox and Fleetwood.

OK.Hands up who has heard of The 1975?
Re: The Brits 2019
I have, maybe because I listen to 6music. Matt Healy is the son of Denise Welch and Tim Healy.
Having said that, I don't know much about their music.

Re: The Brits 2019
They’re pretty well known, I think Undi might have posted them in the past.
The Brits are an industry dominated awards ceremony based on sales and success.
Once that’s accepted there are obviously artists who are successful because they work to a formula and don’t frighten the public as well but success doesn’t necessarily mean a lack of imagination or quality.
Of the winners, Drake really is very good, which is not to say I want to listen to him a lot. Jorja Smith has potential but isn’t there yet. 1975 are decent enough and the rest are OK if you like that sort of thing. I don’t think The Carters are the best of Beyoncé or Jay-Z.

The winners were mentioned on the Today programme. I can proudly announce I had not heard of any of them. Reaching full curmudgeonhood.

I remember the YEAR 1975.
It was when The Bay City Rollers were at their height.

Re: The Brits 2019
I have heard of 1975, my dj partner's 15 year old son is very into them at the moment.
Middle aged men saying they haven't heard of an act says more about us than it does the bands. These acts have all (well mostly ) had number 1's and are quite successful.
I'd forgotten that they even existed until yesterday when I heard Sara Cox saying she was going after her show.
I stopped watching it when that unfunny bloke from Gavin and Stacey presented it.
Ok after a google
British male
Sam Smith
Craig David
Aphex Twin
Giggs
George Ezra – WINNER
not a massive surprise for the winner, I really am not keen. I do love the fact that Aphex Twin gets nominated in this category when he releases stuff. Him winning would make my year. Never really a fan of Craaaig David, Sam Smith's ok, Giggs I don't know of
British female
Florence + the Machine
Jorja Smith – WINNER
Anne-Marie
Lily Allen
Jess Glynne
The winner is actually the only one I haven't heard of, I don't mind the others but don't listen to a lot by any of them
British single
Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa – One Kiss – WINNERS
George Ezra – Shotgun
Rudimental – These Days (feat. Jess Glynne, Macklemore & Dan Caplen)
Dua Lipa – IDGAF
Annie-Marie – 2002
Clean Bandit – Solo (feat. Demi Lovato)
Sigala & Paloma Faith – Lullaby
Ramz – Barking
Jess Glynne – I’ll Be There
Tom Walker – Leave a Light On
My only comment on this group is it does seem to consist of the same people on other's songs. Maybe the organisers should stick to one song by each act. That said, I don't mind the one that won.
British breakthrough
Mabel
Idles
Ella Mai
Tom Walker – WINNER
Jorja Smith
I think I know of the winner, i'd have preferred the Idles to have won. They made my top 20 songs of last year
British group
Arctic Monkeys
Gorillaz
The 1975 – WINNERS
Little Mix
Years & Years
About right I suppose, Arctic Monkeys last album was dreadful. Little Mix are ok, Evie likes them, Gorillaz have been very good in the past. Years and Years are too well produced for my taste, OH likes them.
British video
Anne-Marie – 2002
Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa – One Kiss
Clean Bandit – Solo (feat. Demi Lovato)
Dua Lipa – IDGAF
Jax Jones – Breathe (feat. Ina Wroldsen)
Jonas Blue – Rise (feat. Jack & Jack)
Liam Payne & Rita Ora – For You (Fifty Shades Freed)
Little Mix – Woman Like Me (feat. Nicki Minaj) – WINNERS
Rita Ora – Let You Love Me
Rudimental – These Days (feat. Jess Glynne, Macklemore & Dan Caplen)
I'm surprised this is still a thing, again too many of the same acts. One entry per act and open it up for more acts. Sometimes it's about apearing the nominated category to help get out there to new fans.
International group
The Carters – WINNERS
First Aid Kit
Brockhampton
Chic & Nile Rodgers
Twenty-One Pilots
I didn't even know that the Carters were JZ and B, not heard anything by them. Chic? I love them but their new stuff sin't great, First Aid Kit a bit flowery for me, the other 2 I don't know
International male
Drake – WINNER
Eminem
Kamasi Washington
Shawn Mendes
Travis Scott
I only know of the top 3 in that list, I am not getting Drake. Seems like a decent fella but his vocoder style vocals and lyrics doesn't do much for me, Kamasi Washington is good, Eminem past his best
International female
Cardi B
Camila Cabello
Christine and the Queens
Ariana Grande – WINNER
Janelle Monáe
I actually know of all the acts in this list, although not sure I've heard of Cardi B's music. I don't think I knew of Grande unit the bombing in Manchester but the way she has handled herself has ingratiated herself with me, and she is pretty much the biggest act in the world right now. Monae and Christine and the Queens produce the better music from that group this imo
British album
Jorja Smith – Lost & Found
The 1975 – A Brief History of Online Relationships – WINNERS
Florence + the Machine – High as Hope
Anne-Marie – Speak Your Mind
George Ezra – Staying at Tamara’s
Not heard any of these albums but am happy for Ezra not to have won it
British producer
Calvin Harris
About right, his stuff is very succesful, a little bland for me
Critics’ choice
Sam Fender
Not heard of
Global success
Ed Sheeran
Not for me but nice kid and worked hard
Outstanding contribution to music
Pink
I am for the first time going to sound like an old man, maybe I'm missing something here. Was somebody really good not available?

I see you're doing my trick Undie, of including a bogus made-up name later on in the story, to make sure that everyone reads it to the end.
Well played sir, well played.

I still think they have and energy and originality missing from most of the rest of the Brits.
