Carol Grimes, bit left field I know, but vastly underrated (bit like the Pink Floyd woman).

Early 70s, that where all the good music was.

Kind of depends on the definition of 'chanteuse'. I tend towards the nightclub singer description.

Trying to cover all bases, here's a song by a chanteuse about a chanteuse:

Dusty Springfield by Blossom Dearie

I guess my go-to chanteuse is Julie London - every song seems to be born in a smoky nightclub.

The obvious (but great) one:

Cry me a river - Julie London

Nice cover of the Sinatra standard:

Julie London - In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning (Capitol Records 1960)

I love Blondie, I was lucky enough to see her a lot of years ago. I also have a soft spot for Alison Moyet, she has a fab voice, I was going to say I saw her last year, but it was in 2017, she wrote this song when she was 16 years old :)

Not to everyone's taste but Laura Nyro could combine rock and blues with her gravel voice

Yes Suzy, agree with both of those and I was a Blondie fan from way back, in fact the first album is still my favourite and I saw them back in the 70's too.

Alison Moyet does have a great voice and it took Vince Clarke to realise that he could take her bluesy voice and team it with his electronics to make something new and special.

This is my fave of theirs:

Very much my taste too - I think I posted her somewhere on here not too long ago. I particularly like the jazz influences.

She can be pretty intense but this is one of her lighter ones:

LAURA NYRO - Time And Love

When I say I saw Blondie a lot of years ago, it was in 1999, I wasn’t old enough in the 1970s nor would I have been allowed to go trotting off to see Bands :D

The Live version of Situation on the Alison Moyet Album I have is so good, a lot better than the recorded version, plus she did sing it to me as well :)

I like Moyet's voice but it's with Clarke that I prefer, Situation being my favourite too

Some slightly more obvious ones from classics
Etta James

Nina Simone used as the final titles from Luther Friday night

Mary J Blige

and do you know, I may not have liked much she has done since this song but I do remember seeing Beyonce' sing this live on CDUK or whatever that music show ANt & Dec used to do late 90's/ early00s. Stunning performance of a cracking tune

Crazy In Love
