Re: New for 2019
The Michael Kiwanuka album is pretty good He was recommended to me recently and I was hoping to have a listen but hadn't got around to it but my sister, who we were visiting up North this weekend, was playing the Love & Hate album on vinyl and I was very impressed. Need to listen to a lot more. Clo...

Family, one of my fave bands of the early 70's, vastly underated IMO and wonderful live.. The Weaver's Answer - Family Burlesque - Family Having a bit of a nostalgia fest here tonight.... Like all your picks. My brother (slightly younger) was a big fan was a big fan of Roger Chapman’s Streetwalkers...

Is this soul? Maybe not deep southern, shouty, testifying soul but it certainly stirs my soul:

Re: Best soul song ever?
That's a very tough question and two very good answers.
I feel Bobby 'Blue' Bland needs to be represented since he has one of the great blues-soul voices of all times. This is a personal favourite:
Cry, Cry, Cry

Put me in a touch of a melancholy mood. There isn't anything much more melancholy than an Ira and Charlie song of lost love:

Re: Covers
Like both of those although I don't know The Beatles original.
I think I posted the Ella version of 'Sunshine Of Your Love' a long while back but she did a few 60's covers.
I'm not entirely convinced by this Motown cover but it's well worth a listen:
Get Ready - Ella Fitzgerald

Re: Little Gems
All good tunes and the Eek A Mouse a nice surprise since (understandably) it's usually the fantastic 'Wa-Do-Dem' that gets posted - like the comment that those disliking it were jamaicans who thought it was 'dis i like' I do love an instrumental, especially with a great bassline, a great intro...

Re: Little Gems
I can appreciate the Jackie Leven and I can understand why he's so highly regarded but not really for me. I love Fairport Convention (Liege & Lief being one of my first ever albums) but have always found Sandy Denny's solo output a bit dull. Of course the exception is 'Who knows where the time goes?...

While not wanting to turn this into Song Theme Game 2, this follows the theme with a nice slice of doo-wop soul from the San Francisco TKO's:

Re: Glastonbury 19
I was slightly disappointed with Wu-Tang - OK was about my opinion too. Jungle were good but just not upfront enough to assert themselves on a festival stage - like it or not, it's about more than the music in that setting and all dressing in white doesn't make a 'show'. I'd have watched The Killers...

Re: Glastonbury 19
Stormzy was amazing (except for Chris Martin). My boy had me watching Dave and Loyle Carner who were good for a while but my interest did tail off. The kid from the audience who came on during Dave's set was a highlight. Jungle weren't bad. Chemical Brothers do what the Chemical Brothers do which is...

Re: Elvis Costello
Said it before but we original punks found ‘new wave’ a bit bandwagon-jumping and a watered down version of the real thing. That was slightly my view of EC at the time - we were angry about society and he seemed more angry about his girlfriends. That said, he was good on the Stiff Records Tour I saw...

Re: Liza Tarbuck
I can't stand Tarbuck but live the show, as weird as that sounds. The music is always great. If only she was half as funny as she thinks she is. CC is great, music always great to hear I've had a look at Tarbuck's 'Music Played' list going back a few episodes and it's pretty impressive - don't know...

Thanks, that's new to me and just my cup of tea :) I've always liked Mark and wondered what he was up to.Not much according to Wiki. I never liked him except his music shows which are as close to perfect music radio as I've ever heard (maybe even better than Peel). In contrast to 99%, he never much ...

Re: Liza Tarbuck
I have heard Liza from time to time when she was standing in for another presenter, she usually gets the Bank Holiday shifts. She's a good presenter and does well on panel shows where her laugh is very infectious. As I said, I like her, but that show is very banal - I don't care if the listener is ...
