Re: Little Gems

I did a selection for my reggae/dub producer mate who I visited in the studio last week.
He hadn't heard this one and was surprised it was by a white guy - he liked it lots and there is talk of him doing a cover version:

never heard this before last night, now my favourite of his. Instrumentally just lovely. Vocally, really very good too
T B Sheets - Van Morrison
Re: Little Gems
Yes,thanks.I haven't heard that for a long time.I had the LP once.It had some of his earlier stuff on it.
Re: Little Gems
Never heard of this before and suspect it's right up Max's street.
I get some strange posts appear on my FB page and I try to follow as many up as I can, this mornign was about someone who had picked up some 7" singles in milk crates in the US and this was amongst the pile.
Innervisions - I'm In debt To You
70's soul, nearly disco

Re: Little Gems
You know me too well Undi! I really like that and I like the crate-digging story. I've read a couple of books on the northern scene and there are a few stories of warehouse and thrift shop finds in the US where there have been dozens or more rare singles found in one hit - I know Ian Levine hit the motherlode a couple of times (interesting guy - not keen on his hi-NRG stuff but he was the one that brought Philly/modern soul to the northern scene).Undie wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 11:38 amNever heard of this before and suspect it's right up Max's street.

Like the Van Morrison lots too - I love Them and the classic Astral Weeks album but lots more of his to catch up on.

Re: Little Gems
Not so keen on that piano but after delving further, really like the Beat Girl track. Almost the Bond theme but not quitePsmith wrote: ↑Tue Feb 12, 2019 11:17 pmJohn Barry

Re: Little Gems
I like that lots too - a big fan of soundtracks and John Barry in general. It's worth remembering that the film was set in the jazz cafes of Soho so the music reflects that.Psmith wrote: ↑Tue Feb 12, 2019 11:17 pmJohn Barry

As I mentioned a little while ago, Henry Mancini in particular is repaying a deeper investigation recently.

There's a nice little film from the 60's that has jazz playing all the time in the background.

Following from Ron's Brian Fahey track, here's their best known.
For those of a certain vintage it's the theme music for Alan Freeman's Pick Of The Pops radio show:

Re: Little Gems
Can't argue with either of those except Soul Finger was used in Spies Like Us, not Ghostbusters.
Interesting career, the Bar-Kays, especially since the majority of the first group died in the Otis Redding plane crash (they were his live backing band). Later became a much respected and sampled funk group:
Bar-Kays - Sang & Dance
Just for fun, a version of Soul Finger I've got on a comp. It's posted on YT by John Manship who is the premier soul record dealer in the UK, particularly famous for his Northern Soul rarities:
WILLPOWER - SOUL FINGER
This is fun:
Manship Moments 2 - Biggest Ever Record Find
