Any one want to buy some salad tomatoes? Loads of them in Tesco this morning. No cherry ones though. That's sad.

Environment Sec Therese Coffey suggests people complaining about the tomato shortage should consider eating turnips instead, saying it's 'important we cherish the specialisms we have in this country'
That will be one odd salad or BLT though.

The letter writer has a point, to a point. Sixty years ago we did not have, or feel entitled to, fruit and salad all year round, and relied on what was in season grown at or close to home. That all changed..... after we joined the EU. It should also be remembered, however, that we used to get most of our tomatoes from Jersey/Guernsey, and that industry was killed when we got access to cheaper produce from the EU.
Tomatoes and eggs in Sainsbury's yesterday, but none in Asda.
