Trifle

Post by SuzySu » Mon Dec 03, 2018 3:21 pm

I’ve never made a Trifle before & told my husband I’d have a go at making one instead of buying one. He likes them with Fruit, Jelly, Custard & Cake. I’ve looked online at recipes, not many seem to have Jelly in, also I’ve noticed you don’t have to put Sherry in, it can be different alcohol. I know we have some wonderful cooks on here, do any of you have an easy trifle recipe I could follow :)

My mum uses Amaretto in hers rather than sherry as my brother doesn't like sherry (I know weird right).
cakes type thing soaked in booze, then fruit and jelly mix, then blancmange, then fresh cream. Never ever that uht spray rubbish, then some 100s and 1000's

I like trifle, but without the booze.
I know this is of no help whatsoever, but I thought that you should know.
A wanker AND a pansy apparently.
Oh, and a wimp, and 'not a real man'.

I’ve not had many trifles as I don’t like cream, but I like the rest of it. So you put the Jelly mix over the fruit, then when it’s set, add the Custard, then the Cream, I can make that, that seems easy, we have some bottles of alcohol in the garage, I’ll have to have a look & see what’s there 🙂

I put fruit (I use raspberries) and sponge in the bottom of a bowl, then pour a few (half a bottle) spoonfuls of sherry over them and leave it for a couple of hours. I then put the cooled jelly over the top of it. Be careful what fruit you use, some mean the jelly won't set (I think it's pineapple). Then custard, after the jelly's set, then whipped cream on the top. My MiL puts a broken up flake on to finish it off.

A pal made one with Christmas Pudding and orange jelly, that was lush.

Tiramisu is Italian Trifle without the jelly. Sponge mixed with Tia Maria or Khalua, marscapone mixed with cream. Gorgeous.

I use a Swiss roll, strawberry jelly, pears or peaches, sherry or rum - if I use alcohol - custard once the jelly has set and cream on top once the custard has set.

Thank you very much, I should be able to make one now, the crumbled flake on top will go down well :)

EDIT: For the custard, can I use a can/carton of Ambrosia Custard, I doubt making it from scratch will be a success :)

If in doubt, ask Delia although I'd buy a tub of custard rather than faffing about making it.

Two men were walking through the desert.

They were nearly out of water when they saw three tents in the distance, and hurried over to see if they could get some water.

In the first tent they were told, "I'm sorry we only have trifle."

In the second tent, again, "I'm sorry we only have trifle."

They went into the third tent and again asked for water only to be told, "I'm sorry we only sell trifle."

As they walked on, one turned to the other and said, "Well, that was a trifle bazaar."

I made a Black Forest trifle last year. It was rather nice!

And speaking of trifles -

There once was a lawyer named Rex
with a miniscule organ of sex.
Arraigned for exposure,
He said with composure
"De minimis non curat lex."
I once had a whim and I had to obey it
To buy a French Horn in a second-hand shop;
I polished it up and I started to play it
In spite of the neighbours who begged me to stop.

That’s one of the recipes I found today, but it doesn’t say anything about Jelly :)

I'd use a tin or packet, not worth faffing as Lisa says.

Tinned custard is nicer than home-made, especially cold and straight out of the tin.

I want trifle now.

Oh NO! Tinned custard is vile, as is most ready-made, except for the supermarkets' premium fresh custard, which is yummy, but a bit extravagant in a trifle. Home made, made with full cream, or at a pinch semi-skimmed, milk, and a bit thicker than normal.

Can't agree with that Ron - Ambrosia is aptly named

Used to eat it straight from the can as a nipper
(cue "you're lucky you had a can" comments)

Almost as nice as a Fray Bentos pie

I have bought Ambrosia Custard, in Cartons, do I just pour it from the carton over the jelly bit when it’s set, also, do I do anything to the Whipped Craam before putting it on the Custard. I haven’t bought the whipped cream yet as it didn’t have a long enough date on it :)

You can put the custard straight onto the set jelly.

You need to whip the cream, just take your time with it, you don't want it too set. I sometimes put a bit of icing sugar in just to make it a bit sweeter, but just a touch.

Thank you, I’m sure it would have been easier to buy one :)

Home made ones are much nicer though, Suzy.

I made a black forest one for my visitors yesterday - thanks to Mis' suggestion.
It was very easy, I added some kirsch to the cherries and the chocolate swiss roll I used. I did put jelly in it, even though the recipe I found hadn't. I added some melted chocolate to the vanilla custard I bought from Sainsburys, whipped the cream - carefully as Sandra said - and it was fab. SO good, we made another one with the leftovers tonight :) That's still setting in the fridge though.
