Love them or hate them they are a British National Treasure, aren't they?
Our local shop was having a McVitie promotion.
I was tempted, haven't had one for years.
They were unspeakably revolting, not quite as I remember them at all.
I checked the packet to see if they were actual McVitie.
They were but made in..........Turkey!
They were much nicer when they came from an industrial estate in Manchester.

It's often the case when you have a memory of something from your childhood, isn't it?

A bit like cardboard rather than sponge I thought last time I had one.

The sales of creme eggs dropped when Cadbury stopped using dairy milk for the shell. Another British company lost to the UK.

Yes, in 2014 United Biscuits (McVitie's, Crawfords, Jacob's, Carr's of Carlisle) was sold to Turkish company Yildiz - they use the name Pladis for the trade.
The biscuits and cakes sold in this country are still mostly made in the UK, but those sold in Australia might originate in India.

The recipes of a lot of our favourite food items have changed in recent years, for reason of cost cutting and also to reduce the saturated fat, sugar and salt content, so Jaffa cakes, Digestives, "chocolate digestive" (used to be called Chocolate Homewheat), and Hobnobs, to name but a few, are nothing like as good as they used to be.

But are they cakes, or are they biscuits?

I think they eventually decided on cakes for the VAT or something?

Must admit I'm rather partial to jaffa cakes. Keep them in separate 'lock n lock' box from other biscuits or they go hard in a couple of days. I wonder if that also defines them as not being a biscuit? If they are in the same 'lock n lock' they go hard..............

My claim to fame was being able to fit an entire Wagon Wheel in my mouth and eat it with only a little bit of choking and asphyxiation.

I'm sure they used to be bigger and the chocolate covering more than a micron thick.

They were once a big favourite of mine, when I were a lad.
I can't remember the last time that I ate a biscuit, and it sounds like that is a good thing if they have changed so much.

Following Kraft's example of creating 57 new varieties of Cadbury Dairy Milk, they now do Jaffa cakes in Lemon & Lime, Strawberry and Pineapple
