Karen O and Danger Mouse - WOMAN - Like it - leftfield pop music but still carries some power.
The Cinematic Orchestra - A Caged Bird/Imitations of Life (feat. Roots Manuva) - Having managed to get past the minor piano chord cliche it develops nicely although a touch dirgy for my taste.
Nightmares On Wax - Look Up - Probably my favourite of them all. Manages to be greater than the sum of it's parts and nice soulful vocals over strong but not obtrusive beats while not being hugely original.
Chaka Khan - Hello Happiness - Another like. More a dancer than a listener but a relentless bassline and groove in general and she can belt those vocals out.
Swindle & Ghetts - Drill Work - It's Brownswood which is a fair measure of quality. A little of that drill sound goes a long way but it is like nothing else and this is really nice with some great touches and a decent flow too.
Ian Brown - Ripples - As you say, it's OK.

A young friend I met when he was a camera man at a local television shopping channel, I think he works for the Beeb now, his new track.
He is a Beatles/Oasis/Kinks/Small Faces fan and considering he is only early 20s has a very older music taste, you can hear those influences

Was at The Mad Professor's studio yesterday and picked up a pre-release of his Aretha tribute compilation (see below) as well as his take on Brexit.
Not officially released yet but he's upped it on YouTube. Nice old school vibe and catchy:

"What is the connection of the queen of Soul (Aretha Franklin) and the queens of Lovers Rock several included in this heartfelt tribute to Aretha?
There are several connections between the 2 genres.
1. Many historians consider that Rocksteady the style of Jamaican music from the late 60’s, to have been inspired by the Aretha Franklin hit, Rocksteady.
2. The style of singing that was adopted by Phylis Dillon, Marcia Griffiths, Dawn Penn, further inspiring Sharon Forrester, Carroll Thompson, Sandra Cross, Deborah Glasgow and a whole generation of Lovers Rock singers.
This album opens with One Step Ahead. How this gem escaped me for 4 decades is a real mystery! Having missed the Aretha’s version of the late 60’s, it escaped my attention again when it was covered by the Heptones. The Hiphop version by Mos Def sampled Aretha’s version and became a pop hit about 20 years ago! I still didn’t notice this hit. My discovery of this song was during the week that Aretha died. Listening to Gafa Blue’s Aretha I heard a 20 second snippet of this bittersweet refrain.
A week later, Black Steel, Horseman, Cyrus, Robbie Shakespeare, were invited to record some Rhythm tracks. There were no singers present. Guide voice was supplied by everyone present. Guide voice was supplied by everyone present and the track went down on 2 inch analogue tape, via 4048 SSL G+
The 3rd song in that session is Love The One You’re With and it's another gem. Voiced by Joe Ariwa during my Aussie tour it's a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young song that was immortalised in reggae Treasure isle style by Phyllis Dillon.
Daydreaming started as a 1988 track recorded as a second track for Just Dale. From Harlem, Just was introduced by Mataya Clifford. I played him the freshly recorded rhythm track, he became excited upon hearing it, and said he knew the perfect singer. Just nailed it in 3 takes! The next Sunday The Ranking Miss P blasted it on BBC radio one late night reggae show. The next Monday we had a licence offer from a major label

Finally caught up with Undi's tunes (I'll get to yours later Smitty).
All very fine although the Low Island isn't available any more.
I like and understand what they're doing with the tunes but I'd just like a bit more light and shade sometimes, just to keep me interested.
As you point out, Charlotte Gainsbourg has been releasing music for a while (don't know her acting) and I've got 5:55, the album she did with Jarvis, Air and the rest. It's decent but I can't confess to having returned to it since I bought it in 2006/7. I do like that one though - maybe it's because the vocals balance the music (see comment above).
I haven't had much chance to catch up with new music although Miles is home at the weekend so I'll pick his brains.
