I have to admit I was the same as your friend when I heard my Mum telling my older brother.

When it was his birthday a month or so ago I read an interesting article about his shooting, I just assumed he was shot & died straight away but apparently he didn't. If this article is correct he staggered into a room/office within the building & he was put into the back of a police car to be taken to the hospital, I can't remember where I read it.
