It's no Patti Smith but then I didn't expect it to be, however this British Invasion copy american band Shadow of Knight version of Gloria ain't bad

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdAezc-RX-o
That's an excellent version.

Quick couple of others, complete with anorak notes.

Van briefly played with The Wheels, before they were named The Wheels, as part of the Belfast scene. He left and they moved to the UK and did this slower bassy version of his song:

The Wheels - Gloria - 1965

And over in Australia a group called The Spektors also did a cover featuring their drummer Bon Scott on vocals - he went on to some success a fair few years later.

Not bad - a bit more guitar-based:

The Spektors-Gloria

I've got a soft spot for Ronnie Lane. Not just his music but it seemed like he was a nice bloke.
This is his version of Roll On Babe

I'm with you in having a soft spot for Ronnie - not usually my thing but he's class.

It's a cover but I had no idea of the original.

Following up Davy Graham from the Little Gems thread. He played folk, classical and jazz - there's an interesting version of Sonny Rollins' Don't Stop The Carnival, which most people know by the Alan Price hit, but there's no youtube video, so instead here's his lead on Art Blakey's Moanin'

Judith Durham does have a fantastic voice although I'm a bit more of a Francoise Hardy fan (see below).

Gene Clark's reputation has been growing over the last few years and rightly so, although I'm not so keen on the singer-songwriter genre in general.

Very nice version.

You'll be unsurprised to know I've got a few covers of Moanin' myself.

The Charles Mingus version is obviously very 'jazz' and great but I'm fond of this vocal version by Regina Bell.

She's was better known as a straight soul vocalist early in her career but this is maybe a bit more interesting. From a very fine album of covers called 'Lazy Afternoon':

REGINA BELLE / MOANIN'

I also can't resist this version from Henry Mancini who I have been enjoying more and more over recent years, partly as a result of reading Donald 'Steely Dan' Fagen's appreciation of him, although I was a fan before. The notes with the YT post are pretty accurate - enjoyable but not great:

She's got a very interesting u tube channel with tutorials about famous drummers.

There's something wrong there. Maybe it's just out of sync but as a (poor, admittedly) ex-drummer, the audio and the video don't seem to quite match.

I didn't used to be much of a Moon fan as I always thought him a bit 'busy' but I must say I've revised my view over recent years - his style certainly suited The Who.

It's hard to say who my drum heroes are - certainly all of the several James Brown drummers plus Art Blakey (see the original 'Moanin').

Stewart Copeland often seems to be rated as a good drummer by those that know that sort of thing.

Yes, i remember there being a best drummer ever type program presented by Mark Radcliffe alongside Copeland and he said that he was disapointed not to see Copeland's name in the top 20, and he's a drummer.

MacColl did no wrong as far as I'm concerned

He's pretty good but I still find it hard to get over him being in The Police who rode the punk and reggae bandwagons without the necessary conviction for either. Decent enough pop music in hindsight though but not for me.

I didn't know Mark Radcliffe was a drummer.
He and Marc Riley (Mark and Lard) were responsible for some sublime radio in the early days of Radio 5.

Not sure if you have spotify or another streaming account but Weezer have released an album called Teal
All covers, not sure if they all appear on YT yet

1. "Africa" Toto
2. "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" Tears for Fears
3. "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" Eurythmics
4. "Take On Me" a-ha
5. "Happy Together" The Turtles
6. "Paranoid" Black Sabbath
7. "Mr Blue Sky" Electric Light Orchestra
8. "No Scrubs" TLC
9. "Billie Jean" Michael Jackson
10. "Stand by Me" Ben E King

Worth a listen, all very Weezer wounding but close enough to the originals.

Mercury Rev have covered Bobbie Gentry Delta Sweete album, two from it

Tobacco Road

Ode To Billy Joe

Like those.

The Weezer album is the sort of thing that will only be available for a short time.

The most disappointing thing about streaming services is the way tracks get deleted without any warning. I was looking for some Bob James tracks which I'd added to the library, probably following something we've discussed here, only to find them "greyed out" and not available. Some other rarities or obscurities as well.

I've never had a problem except for tracks that once upon a time I logged on where my main collection was and now doesn't play on Spotify because it appears in my collection, not sure why but to be honest I rarely switch that laptop on these days

Very nice.

I know this version of Tobacco Road from Edgar and Johnnie Winter from one of the CBS samplers I mention from time-to-time - quite sophisticated listening for an eleven or twelve year old although it's a pretty straightforward version:

Edgar Winter - Tobacco Road 1970

If you like it then the live version on YT is worth checking out.

Since we've been mentioning Dylan covers, here are a few from the Max library:

Them - It's All Over Now (Baby Blue)

ISLEY BROTHERS - LAY LADY LAY

Georgie Fame - Down Along the Cove
The flip side is a decent version of I'll Be Your Baby Tonight but isn't on YT.

The TURTLES ~ "IT AIN'T ME BABE" 1965
