I do.I've only ever heard The Nashville Teens before.Maximus wrote: ↑Tue Jan 29, 2019 11:07 amVery nice.
I know this version of Tobacco Road from Edgar and Johnnie Winter from one of the CBS samplers I mention from time-to-time - quite sophisticated listening for an eleven or twelve year old although it's a pretty straightforward version:
Edgar Winter - Tobacco Road 1970
If you like it then the live version on YT is worth checking out.

It's a well-covered song, everyone from Frank Ifield to War.
John D Loudermilk wrote it, and recorded it first

Haven't heard that - excellent thanks Ron.RockitRon wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 10:36 amIt's a well-covered song, everyone from Frank Ifield to War.

I've got another three versions in the library: Rare Earth, Lou Rawls (live) and this one from the legendary Nuggets garage band comp:
The Blues Magoos - Tobacco Road
Weirdly, The Blues Magoos moved from a 60's psych/garage band, lost a lot of personnel, and ended up doing some very good funk-rock:

Re: Covers
Never been a big Devo fan, all a bit forced eccentricity for me. I prefer proper madness like Throbbing Gristle and the like.
The Nilsson is damn near perfect. I've never quite got round to checking if his other output is as good as many people say it is and there are lots of connections and strange bits in his career.
For example, he's known as a songwriter but his two biggest hits (Everybody's Talkin' and Without You) weren't written by him.
'Without You' was written by Badfinger which is another group that everyone raves about but, again, I've never really caught up with them. One of the writers committed suicide, partly because of a dispute over royalties from the song.
To make things even more difficult, one of Nilsson's better known songs is called 'Without Her' but is entirely different song.
I don't have the original but I've got two really excellent covers, to make it even more confusing one by Julie London re-titled 'Without Him':
Blood Sweat and Tears-Without Her
Without Him - Julie London
I'll put my anorak back on the peg...

I bought The Point by Harry way back when but only played it one or twice.
Re: Covers
I know it's sacrilege but I prefer the reggae versions of a lot of popular songs including this one, originally by Marmalade.
Two of the sweetest voices in reggae and made for this song in my opinion:
Reflections in My Life - Ruddy Thomas & Barry Biggs
(It's misnamed on this album - should be 'Reflections Of My Life')

Re: Covers
Following from Psmith's post of 'For What It's Worth' I thought I'd post a couple of covers from the library but I couldn't choose which since they're all quite different and I like them all so...
The most recent - very decent pop-dance-rap version from a 90's UK outfit:
Oui 3 -For What It's Worth
Excellent 1969 version by Cher - great slide guitar:
For What It's Worth
Swamp-gospel (!) version by the wonderful Staples Singers, another with great guitar:
The Staples Singers - For What It's Worth (Buffalo Springfield Cover)
There was always going to be a reggae version, this one with the great Slim Smith on lead vocal:
The Uniques - Watch This Sound (For What It's Worth)
Jazzy and grows into something very funky:
Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - For What It's Worth

I prefer the original but Oui3,Staples and Sergio are my picks.
Re: Covers
How about this smooth version of a Beatles classic
Junior Parker - tomorrow never knows
This is the song the Chemical Brother's play as they come on stage before blowing the house down

Re: Covers
Like both of those although I don't know The Beatles original.
I think I posted the Ella version of 'Sunshine Of Your Love' a long while back but she did a few 60's covers.
I'm not entirely convinced by this Motown cover but it's well worth a listen:
Get Ready - Ella Fitzgerald

Odd thing, ain't it... you meet people one at a time, they seem decent, they got brains that work, and then they get together and you hear the voice of the people. And it snarls.

How cool is this, Dirty Harry's son and Joni Mitchell.

I know it's a Leonard Cohen song but I do not know the original, however I do like this version..
