I was an avid Peel listener and can't remember it all,not unusual these days, though.

That's nice - that psych-folk is among the most collectable vinyl around these days.

Back to Peel. This is the playlist for that groundbreaking show - I can still remember how excited I was listening to it. I had all the contemporary UK releases but the earlier tunes were new to me. This is the one from 'Nuggets':

The Seeds - Pushin' Too Hard (1966-67) HQ

He plays a Shadows Of Night tune but this is the one on 'Nuggets'. It's a cover of a Bo Diddley tune but very different to that version. What it is very similar to is Bowie's Jean Genie which is pretty much a cover of The Shadows Of Night but with different lyrics. Wiki thinks Jean Genie sounds like The Yardbirds' version of Bo's 'I'm A Man' but I beg to differ. Make your own mind up:

The Shadows of Knight - Oh Yeah

Here are the details of the show:

The most catchy garage track ever and very rare in original vinyl (nice copy went for $2,600 last year).

The quality could be better but this original footage of them is great - some rather fierce haircuts!

We were round some friends' last night and he's a big music fan.

Played me this with the 'guess who it is' question. I absolutely knew the voice but couldn't recall the name (might be a red wine problem) but I was surprised when the truth was revealed. Not incredible but worthy of 'little gem' status. From what I heard of it, the rest of the album was a bit more what I'd expect:

I play the Fatboy Slim version of it out, it is stil quite popular on the dance floor. I think the remix kind of killed off the band as it was so popular and nothing they did sounded like that.
I remember hearing the original of the "chart show" or something like that, Peel was a fan so I was aware of them before. they did very little wrong imo

Fatboy slim knows his stuff and I am a big fan of his style, even if I don't like every song he has done

Love this, reminds me of Whitley Bay ice rink when I was a kid, skating round and round and round when we stayed with my Grandpa.

Quite like the Fontaines DC and Dick Dale is (was) great too.

I've been rewinding this fantastic non-cheesy disco classic a lot recently - great intro and just love it when the bassline drops:

On my one sojourn to Nottingham ice rink they had someone on the hammond organ, and Reginald Dixon he (or she) was not.
But I digress - Chris Farlowe reminded me to look up Mike d'Abo's recording of Handbags and Gladrags, and in doing so came upon this prime example of a cheesy gem, which I had not realised was one of his...

Dunno about 'cheesy' but a definite gem - don't know it and like it lots. You can hear a similarity to Paul Jones's voice which is probably one of the reasons D'Abo was chosen as his replacement.

Thanks for that - great harmonies (a big love of mine) that lift it above similar folky music and the tiny flashes of Fripp (?) guitar are great too.
