This, I have with my headphones on ,because my OH hates his voice. But I think his stuff is pretty good.

I can hear that his voice might be a bit 'marmite' - it reminds me of someone else but the name won't come to mind.
Little Gems
Odd thing, ain't it... you meet people one at a time, they seem decent, they got brains that work, and then they get together and you hear the voice of the people. And it snarls.
Re: Little Gems
I'm with Gassy on this - I've discovered lots of great music from the board (and previous ones) - as mentioned previously I now have an extensive 'Dimitri From Paris' (among others - also Patrick Cowley) section in my CD collection thanks to Undi and have discovered lots of jazz, reggae and world music thanks to Gassy (Honey Boy and Tarrus Riley come to mind reggae-wise, and Takuya Kuroda among others with the jazz).
Anyway, posted 'The Newcomers' on the song theme thread and it's from a limited edition CD that collected their rare singles along with unreleased material from the Stax vaults. Soul specialist Tony Rounce wrote the sleeve notes and comments:
The Exit-The Newcomers
This is a bit more uptempo and doo-woppy and another great pop-soul track - not bad for a B-Side!:
Mannish Boy-The Newcomers
Moving on, one of the lead singers, Randy Brown, released a couple of romantic soul albums that are really good and underestimated - this isn't one of the better known tracks and probably not to most tastes but a personal favourite. Mid-tempo more than a ballad - the message is in the title and some great vocals:
Randy Brown – I Wanna Make Love To You (1978)

I'm not really knowledgeable enough to be able to say whether there is any competition for 'The Exit' being 'one of the greatest group records to ever come out of the American south' but it's a belter and there's hardly a bad track on the whole CD.A few of their shelved tracks have been out before in our “Volts Of Stax” series and elsewhere on Kent, but the majority debut here on “Mannish Boys”. Highlights include a sweet essay on the Steve Mancha/Johnnie Taylor classic ‘I Don’t Want To Lose You’, the torrid ‘Stop By Here’ and the sublime ‘The Exit’, which in my opinion is one of the greatest group records to ever come out of the American south.

Re: Little Gems
I like that a lot too.
I'm not turning this into a second song theme thread but that reminds me of a peak funk/soul/latin fusion album from a band called Harlem River Drive.
Spearheaded by keyboardist Eddie Palmieri one commentator remarks: 'The record is a landmark crossover album from the early 70s - cut at the end of the Latin soul era, but featuring that genre's wonderful mix of Puerto Rican soul, Spanish Harlem Latin, and New York funk'.
One of the funkier cuts:
Harlem River Drive - Idle Hands - 1971 [Latin Funk]
More Latin-Soul - some great guitar but it's all great:
Harlem River Drive - Seeds Of Life (1971)
It's a bit of a political album too - Harlem River Drive is the motorway through Harlem where the suburban rich drive on their way to central Manahattan.

I like that, I love the original but musically isn't as strong as Timebox's version. Both great dance numbers.Maximus wrote: ↑Tue Nov 20, 2018 4:40 pmPosted a Timebox instrumental on the song theme thread but this is their real classic, with a vocal too. Cover of a Frankie Valli tune but I can't confess to knowing the original:
Timebox - Beggin'
I might take this on Friday , to play in my "Crazy Horses", "Love is the drug" slot

Struggling to work out what those three have in common to put them in a slot - fond of all three tunes though.Undie wrote: ↑Tue Nov 27, 2018 11:43 amI like that, I love the original but musically isn't as strong as Timebox's version. Had a look on social media and, once I'd twisted my head sideways to view the clip, it looks like a good night. Certainly the punters appreciated Blue Monday, as they should...

Some time ago I bought an LP "Wrong Way Up" by Cale and Eno. Just out of curiosity.
I think it's pretty good.Apparently they didn't get on.Not much of a surprise there.

Ahhhh, that makes sense.
Got to say I really like the look and sound of that night and it looked pretty popular too.

Re: Little Gems
The video doesn't do the night much justice to be honest, the guy who organises the entertainment for the venue came very late and video'd it. It was about 12:45 and the dancefloor had started emptying by then, the dance floor was much fuller before then.

Re: Little Gems
There are a few from that era: Bert Jansch, Richard Thompson, John Renbourn, John Martyn and, I think, Michael Chapman.
I'm no expert though - I do have a Bert Jansch album and, as I'm sure I mentioned many times, Pentangle were my first live band.
