Re: HMV
The new owner had better get his finger (and wallet) out quickly. There was no-one in the store (apart from staff twiddling their thumbs) when I looked in yesterday, and the two new release CDs I would have expected to see and buy were not there - in fact, apart from Ariana Grande and The Specials I...

Doug Putman, reported in The Telegraph, said that he was disappointed to lose the Oxford Street site, and was "prepared to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars on it, but the landlord apparently has a better offer."
Oxford Street will certainly be poorer without it.

Re: HMV
Yes, we have a branch of Rough Trade as well. Expensive, but stocks more imports and independent stuff.
Re: HMV
The list of stores for closure has now been posted https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-47132310 Slightly puzzling. I've always loved going to the Peterborough one because it's bigger and has a better range (of music). Perhaps rent is a big factor, since a lot of them are in the big shopping centres ...
Re: HMV
So, Sunrise Records of Canada has bought it, talking about the "retail experience" that we get nostalgic for, giving stores some autonomy to cater for local tastes, and of stocking more vinyl (LPs to you and me). Mike Ashley will have to find something else to fill the empty acres of space at House ...

Re: Johnnie Walker
Has his 70's show developed from just playing early 70's prog ? That was all he seemed to play in the early shows. Hardly representative of the most diverse decade in music Yes, when R2 first started Sounds of the 70s Steve Harley presented and it was mainly prog, and went out late at night. When J...

It's a well-covered song, everyone from Frank Ifield to War.
John D Loudermilk wrote it, and recorded it first

Re: Covers
Like those. The Weezer album is the sort of thing that will only be available for a short time. The most disappointing thing about streaming services is the way tracks get deleted without any warning. I was looking for some Bob James tracks which I'd added to the library, probably following somethin...

Joe Jackson has a new CD out - "Fool"
Cannot believe that it's 40 years since it was different for girls.
Some tracks sound just like that, but the lead track is more upbeat

Re: guilty pleasures
I like an awful lot of mainstream popular music, of all genres, including the popular classical repertoire, and there is absolutely nothing that I would be embarrassed about owning up to liking or owning, and that includes these two examples from our European colleagues Zaz - Je veux 2raumwohnung - ...

Re: Earliest Musical Memories.
For the first ten years of my life we had neither television nor record player, so it was the BBC Light Programme, and the only music worth remembering was the occasional show by Ted Heath and his Music. His big band was so powerful and tight it was almost alien, compared to what the BBC offered the...
Re: HMV
Apparently it was a collapse in the sales of DVDs which was a major factor.
That I can understand.

Re: HMV
One of the Twitter comments hit the nail on the head for me -five years ago, people would have had around £20 to £30 worth of CDs or DVDs in their Christmas present list, myself included. How many people could say this for 2018? JD McPherson, Curse of Lono, Beth Hart, Fara, Nick Lowe, and Ro...
HMV
Gone again https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-46708075 ...and if Hilco can't make it pay I guess no-one can, so the outlook for it, in its present form and size, is bleak. I have to say that the Nottingham (Victoria Centre) store was busy enough in the run-up to Christmas. Unlike the still huge num...

I'll have to find some time to work my way through this thread - looks promising.
In the meantime, I've just noticed that Radio 2's album of the week is the excellent JD McPherson's "Socks"

Re: The White Album
I remember being slightly underwhelmed when it came out. There are more than a few half-songs, throw-aways, studio doodles and jams, and they were scattered, seemingly haphazardly, through the album (rather than being joined together in a medley, like most of side two of Abbey Road). So you get joke...
A mystery
Anyone know why this 1970s track is currently No 2 in the French pop chart?
